Abstract

This study examines how Al Jazeera framed the demonstrations and collective violence that took place in Jakarta during the escalation period of 25–31 August 2025. The research aims to identify dominant framing patterns used by a global media outlet in representing public protests and state responses within the context of Indonesia’s contemporary political dynamics. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the study applies the Gamson and Modigliani framing analysis model to analyze eight online news articles published by Al Jazeera. The analysis focuses on textual and visual elements, including headlines, narrative structure, source selection, and accompanying images, in order to capture both micro-level and macro-level framing tendencies. The findings reveal a consistent core frame portraying the protests as popular resistance against unresponsive political elites and repressive state actions. Collective violence is not depicted as an inherent characteristic of the demonstrations, but rather as a consequence of perceived policy injustice and coercive responses by state authorities. Through the prioritization of grassroots voices, moral evaluations emphasizing justice and accountability, and the amplification of nationwide protest dynamics, Al Jazeera constructs a narrative that highlights structural inequality and civic discontent.
