Abstract

ABSTRACT

Background: one way to maintain oral hygiene is by toothbrushing. Toothbrush is the most efficient tool to remove plaque in the mouth, especially on the surface of the teeth and tongue. However, toothbrush can be a source of contamination if it is not properly cared. Bacterial contamination of toothbrushes is the main factor in the development of various oral diseases. Toothbrush can be contaminated, depending on where the toothbrush is stored and the duration of use of the toothbrush. Toothbrush should be replaced every month or a maximum of once every three months and should not be stored in a closed or wet containers. Bacteria that are often found in contaminated toothbrush are Streptococcus, Staphylococcus and Klebsiella which can cause diseases in the mouth. Purpose: this study aims to conduct an integrative study of scientific evidence related to the bacterial contamination potential of toothbrushes. Method: Journal analysis from Google Scholar, National Library of the Republic of Indonesia, Science Direct, EBSCO, and PubMed databases from 2011 to 2020. Conclusion: Maintain the cleanliness of the toothbrush storage area and replace the toothbrush a maximum of once every 3 months to prevent bacterial contamination
