ABSTRACT

Background: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), often referred to as canker sores, is an ulcer on the oral mucosa that can repeatedly occur, is painful, and has no known cause. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 65% of developed countries and 80% of developing countries have used medicines made from natural ingredients for their health care needs. The medicinal plant that has been used in various countries is Aloe vera. In dentistry, Aloe vera gel has been used to help wound recovery healing. Gel derived from aloe vera leaves is helpful for various diseases; one of them is a minor type of RAS. There are differences in aloe vera concentrations, which help cure oral diseases such as minor types of RAS. Objective: To analyze the use of Aloe vera as an alternative therapy for RAS. Method: We analyze ten journal databases; Europe PMC, Hindawi, MDPI, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Ebsco, and various international journals websites using the keywords: aloe vera, recurrent aphthous stomatitis, ulcer size, herbal medicine. Conclusion: This review reveals that aloe vera in the treatment of minor types of RAS has shown a significant effect in reducing the size of the ulcer, a reduction in the sensation of pain, and reduction of burning sensation. Aloe vera can be an option that is safe and effective, which does not have side effects at the time of use, and can be tolerated very well by the patient's oral cavity in long-term use.
