Abstract

This study aims to analyze and interpret the construction of news discourse on personal data protection in the online media Kompas.com during the period of June–July 2024. The research applies a constructivist paradigm with a qualitative approach using Teun A. Van Dijk’s discourse analysis method. The analysis focuses on three levels of textual structure: macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure, examining selected news articles addressing data breaches, cyberattacks, and the implementation of the Personal Data Protection Law. The findings reveal that at the macro level, Kompas.com frames personal data protection as an urgent issue with significant social and economic implications. At the superstructure level, the news narratives are organized systematically to emphasize regulatory urgency and governmental responsibility. At the micro level, the use of terms such as “data breach,” “misuse,” “identity theft,” and “financial fraud” constructs personal data as a strategic yet vulnerable asset. Furthermore, the use of formal and technical language enhances the sense of professionalism and credibility, reinforcing the legitimacy of information within the digital public sphere.
