EFEKTIFITAS PENGGUNAAN TONGUE SCRAPER SETELAH MENYIKAT GIGI DALAM MENGHILANGKAN HALITOSIS
Abstract
Latar belakang: halitosis atau bau mulut adalah bau yang tidak enak yang berasal dari rongga mulut. Halitosis menjadi permasalahan kesehatan mulut yang mempengaruhi psikologi dan kehidupan sosial. Halitosis berasal dari gas Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSCs) yang terdiri atas hydrogen sulfida, metil merkaptan, dan dimetil sulfida. Cara mekanis menghilangkan halitosis dengan menyikat gigi dan penggunaan tongue scraper. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui efektifitas penggunaan Tongue scraper setelah menyikat gigi dalam menghilangkan halitosis. Metode: sampel adalah pasien dewasa dengan halitosis dibagi secara acak menjadi 2 kelompok, yaitu kelompok perlakuan pasien diminta untuk menyikat gigi disertai penggunaan tongue scraper, sedangkan kelompok kontrol hanya menyikat gigi saja. Metode organoleptik digunakan untuk mengukur halitosis sebelum dan sesudah perlakuan. Hasil: sebelum perlakuan, skor halitosis secara statistik tidak terdapat perbedaan yang bermakna antar ke kelompok perlakuan dan kelompok kontrol. Antara sebelum dan sesudah perlakuan, terlihat reduksi halitosis yang signifikan pada ke dua kelompok. Sesudah perlakuan secara statistik terdapat perbedaan skor halitosis yang signifikan antar ke dua kelompok. Kesimpulan: terjadi reduksi halitosis baik pada kelompok perlakuan (menyikat gigi disertai penggunaan tongue scraper) maupun kelompok kontrol (hanya menyikat gigi). Reduksi halitosis pada menyikat gigi disertai penggunaan tongue scraper lebih besar dibandingkan dengan menyikat gigi saja. Penggunaan tongue scraper setelah menyikat gigi efektif dalam mengatasi halitosis.
