Abstract

The Tesso Nilo Forest conflict in Riau Province, marked by forest encroachment, illegal oil palm expansion, and threats to Sumatran elephant and tiger habitats, has become a significant environmental issue in digital spaces. This study aims to analyze Greenpeace Indonesia’s narrative construction of the Tesso Nilo conflict, identify audience responses, and explain the formation of Networked Publics on Instagram @greenpeaceid. This research uses a qualitative approach with a netnographic method. Data were collected from Greenpeace Indonesia’s Instagram post, including captions, visual content, audience comments, and mention networks. The analysis applies the Networked Publics framework, consisting of awareness building, information circulation, public engagement, mobilization, and digital advocacy, supported by Social Network Analysis to map communication networks among users. The findings show that Greenpeace constructs the Tesso Nilo conflict as an ecological crisis, a failure of environmental governance, and an issue of environmental justice. Audience responses include campaign support, criticism of the government, concern over forest destruction, and calls for collective action. SNA strengthens the findings by revealing mention networks, public attention toward specific actors, and discursive communities discussing forest destruction, state responsibility, and ecological restoration. This study concludes that Greenpeace Indonesia’s digital activism forms Networked Publics through connected attention, audience interaction, information circulation, and digital advocacy.
